Bikram at YogaFish

Isn't it great when you meet someone in a totally unrelated context and discover your mutual love of yoga? That's what happened when I met Kevin. After a few long talks about life & yoga, he was excited to come and experience Tantra Yoga on my Drakensberg Yoga Weekend retreat. During the retreat he gave us an impromptu demo, after which I was super excited to visit his home studio to learn more about Bikram and Hot Yoga.

Two weeks ago I finally got to see Kev in action at YogaFish where we did 90 minutes of alignment-intensive yoga in a studio heated to 38 degrees. I was quite unprepared for the experience but LOVED it nonetheless. The heat in the room reminded me pleasantly of my time in India, without the breeze. Not used to drinking water during my practice, I adapted pretty quickly after dropping my drishti to watch endless beads of sweat drip onto my towel while holding Dandayamana Dhanyurasana.

Check out the gallery below for photos from Drakensberg Yoga Weekend and read on for my experience at Yogafish.

What to expect:

Class size:

Small to medium classes - you will receive individual attention & adjustments if necessary. Duration:

90 minutes Equipment:

Bring your own mat & towel Style:

Bikram and Ashtanga Yoga. Bikram Yoga is practised in a hot room so be prepared for that! Atmosphere:

Friendly & focused. Beautiful wooden floors, plenty of light and an amazing feel.

My experience:

The class itself is powerful, and Kevin dedicates himself to creating the right energy in the room. The yoga I practise is very "floppy and relaxed" whereas Bikram is very tight and precise, but I didn't feel uncomfortable at all, and there were plenty of opportunities to relax or take a break from the more intense poses. Kevin is a strong leader, delivering precise and clear directions and alignment cues. It was very easy to follow and stay focused while moving through the poses. I learnt so many new things, and although this is way more intense than what I am used to, I can understand why people fall in love with this practice!
